Project Chaining

This guide helps RDI projects plan what comes after the current project, from follow-on funding and stakeholder alignment to market uptake and scaling.

Project results rarely move from research to market in one step. CETPartnership projects often produce concepts, prototypes and system solutions that need further validation, demonstration, financing and commercial development before they can create full impact. Project chaining helps teams understand what is needed at each stage: suitable follow-on funding, clear ownership of results, stakeholder engagement, business model development, and readiness for adoption.

By mapping possible pathways across RDI funding, demonstration instruments, investors, regional programmes and deployment finance, the guide supports projects in planning continuity beyond the current funding period. It also highlights how societal, market and commercial readiness can be developed alongside technical progress, so that promising solutions are easier to validate, scale and implement in real-world energy systems.

You can use this guide together with the CETPartnership Impact Library and Impact Network to identify suitable follow-up pathways, strengthen exploitation planning, and connect with potential partners, funders and adopters.
